Australian:

Board shorts to the rescue!

August 12, 2013

Before the 1970s, male surfers often wore waist shorts or canvas surf trunks while at the beach. Then came Alan Green and John Law, two Australians who are also known as the founders of Quiksilver. Though also a strong marketing opportunity, Green and Law created the boardshorts as surfing gear that would be lightweight and water-resistant.

Not only did boardshorts, with its shorter leg built for more leg movement, become a success on the Australian runway, but they exploded in popularity with other Australian surfing apparel companies such as Billabong and Ripcurl. In 1976, boardshorts became an international success as surfer Jeff Hakman brought 20 pairs of boardshorts to America to sell on the American market. To this day, they remain high in popularity even as they have evolved throughout the decades. Not only have boardshorts extended into women’s fashion, but they became even more functional and high-tech—today, surfers can find boardshorts made with lycra for less restriction as well as bacteria and rash protection. No wonder they remain popular even into the 2010s!

Mini skirt

August 6, 2013

Did you know that the mini-skirt actually originates back to Egypt and Europe's oldest villages circa 5400-4700 B.C.? And did you also know that the early twentieth century return of the miniskirt has roots in Australia? That’s right! In 1965, Jean Shrimpton, a famous English model of the “Swinging London” era, wore a miniskirt to the Melbourne Cup Carnival in Australia. Since then, the miniskirt has been a staple in women’s closets.

What makes this event special for Australia and for the miniskirt is that Shrimpton wore her white mini-dress without gloves, a hat, or even stockings. The derby was a conservative event, and Shrimpton’s choice of clothing was shocking and controversial at the time. Though Shrimpton admits that she didn’t believe what she wore was “very professional” once she looked back at the event, she was “rather surprised” at the uproar that her short skirt caused. Now, almost fifty years later, we aren’t complaining that Shrimpton chose to wear such a fashion-forward liberating dress.

Billabong!

July 22, 2013

Billabong is mostly associated with surfing, skateboarding, and clothing wear, but did you know that this popular clothing company originated in Australia? Named after the Wiradjuri word for a creek bed that holds water during a rainy season, Billabong started in 1973 by Gordon and Rena Merchant in Gold Coast, Queensland in Australia. They were inspired by the 1960s-1970 surfing lifestyle in Australia, and their success by the 1980s allowed them to expand throughout Australia. Since then, Billabong products can be found in countries all over the world, such as the United States, Canada, Japan, and even South Africa. Not only do they sell surfwear, swimwear, and skateboarding products, but their products show the culture and style of Australian surfing culture such as board shorts, beanies (also a popular style of hat in Australia!), and flip-flops (“thongs” in Australia). Now that’s righteous!

Pin-Up Curls were a riot in the fashion world in the 1940s and are still seen in the 20th century. This is the one kind of do you'd want to wear on a work day and a night out with the girls. This hairstyle originated in the 1920s Australia, then later became big in the 1930s when actress Mae West began wearing this look.
